Beyond Writing What You Know

Posted: October 15, 2009

Talking about writing about what you know best, these manga creators have taken it notches higher and have not only written about it – but drawn about it patiently and painstakingly to share what they know! Doing two things that they do best, these manga creators made manga and used their own lives as the basis!

Bakuman

From the genius partners who gave birth to the very famous thriller series Death note is this new manga - Bakuman! While it is less dark and relatively lighter, it does not hinder them from displaying their talent as Bakuman is a humble story much akin to their own – a story about two manga creators.

Mashiro is a talented artist who gave up on his dream to be a manga-ka as his uncle dies as one, instead he faced his life as a normal student… until Takagi comes into the picture. Takagi is the brightest boy in his class, without even trying – he tops the class ever so easily, however his secret dream is to become a manga writer and he urges Mashiro to do it with him. Together, the two become Ashirogi Muto, the youngest manga creators to ever get serialized in Jump Comics.

Boku, Otaryman

A different kind of series, Boku, Otaryman or literally ”I, Otaryman” is a autobiographical manga wherein the author himself writes about something he knows all too well. What else? His life, of course! The word Otaryman is a combination of “Otaku” and “salary man” and the title is a confession of the creator’s actual state. In the manga, he relates his life as a twenty-eight year old bachelor.

Think you know something just as well as they do? Then give it a try!
